Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Preparing students for their future as architects of societies where all are responsible for the common good.

As a Montessori school, we teach children to recognize and appreciate human similarities and value human solidarity. As an educational institution working towards equity and justice, we also teach children to recognize and value human differences.

We work to co-create a community where difference is recognized and celebrated, not just tolerated, and inclusion rather than assimilation is the goal. We strive for vibrant co-existence by means of skillful engagement across difference which includes affirming each individual’s identity so that they may be a full participant in every experience offered.

EACMSI culture, rooted in respect and personal responsibility, is already primed to cultivate an environment that allows a diverse community to flourish. We further contextualize difference through curriculum and day to day experiences when addressing concepts such as race, gender, ethnicity, ability and sexual orientation. The sum total is sound preparation for our students to thrive in an increasingly global society.

We consider our diversity, equity and inclusion initiative to be fundamental to our mission.

EACMSI is proud to partner with Dr. Nia Nunn, Associate Professor in Education at Ithaca College, a performer-scholar-mother-activist, and the President of the Southside Community Center’s Board of Directors. Dr. Nunn serves EACMSI as a consultant, teacher trainer and mentor.

As a Montessori school, we teach children to recognize and appreciate human similarities and value human solidarity.

At The Elizabeth Ann Clune Montessori School of Ithaca we prepare children for leadership in an equitable, just and peaceful world.

All students should have access to safe spaces to connect with those with shared salient identities, as well as brave spaces to forge relationships despite discomfort.

We believe…

  • Diversity in ethnicity, race, gender, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation and social class makes us a stimulating and relevant learning and growing community.
  • Diversity leads to academic excellence and is critical to building leadership qualities in our students.
  • To best prepare our students for the future, daily life at EACMSI should involve interacting and working with a multitude of others, contemplating various and differing points of view, and taking in and appreciating multiple perspectives brought forward by people from divergent backgrounds.
  • All students deserve to see their identities represented and reflected in the curriculum.

The best way to get a sense of who we are and how we do things is to observe a classroom in action.

Diversity Resources

At EACMSI, we recognize the need for fundamental changes in order to transition successfully from a predominantly white institution to one in which each individual – regardless of identity – can thrive.
